What's in a Theme?

To get your gears grinding and your heart pumping with excitement for our nuptials, we're gonna spill a little secret. Our wedding has a theme. And it is AWESOME.

What could it be, you ask? The Gay Nineties? New Wave? One Night in Bangkok?

Well, close.

Our theme is... PURPLE RAIN.

Say, what?!?! Yes. Like the movie, circa 1984, starring his royal badness, Prince. But, what's in a theme?

We originally were thinking more traditional frou-frou blah. In fact, somewhere between no theme and Purple Rain existed Monet's Waterlilies. Now, no offense to Monet, but his waterlilies ain't got NOTHIN' on Purple Rain.

So.

Our colors are dark purple (obvs), and light green as an accent. You can choose to embrace the theme, or ignore it. Although, I can guarantee you'll have MUCH more fun in purple.

Other ideas for you to run with: lace. Pearls. Crushed velvet. I'm gonna throw this out there - best Prince gets a prize.

By the time we get married, we will have been living together for four years. (Scandalous!) There isn't much traditional wedding gift stuff we really need; and, we feel blessed just to have you joining us for our special day - what more could we ask for?

That said, we know that people will want to get something to celebrate our marriage.

Being pretty non-traditional, we decided to go for something different: we registered for a honeymoon. We know that traveling with gifts can be a pain (we've tried!), and shipping costs are outrageous. Therein lies the genius of a honeymoon registry: no shipping costs. No overweight baggage fees. It's absolutely brilliant!

And you better believe we've planned a non-traditional honeymoon!! We are planning to spend a week in Reykjavik, Iceland, home of geothermal spas and Bjork. We plan to whale-watch, and snowmobile on a GLACIER, and spend an evening under the stars in a hot spring. We are BEYOND excited about our trip, and can't wait to come back and share all sorts of pictures and out of this world stories with all of you!

The Bride!

Dana's a Lush bathing, Wearable Sculpture obsessing, iMac operating designer of graphics. She has a BA in English, an MS in Writing: Book Publishing, and is an ordained minister of the Universal Life Church of Modesto, California. However, she refuses to officiate for a wedding until the right to marry is extended to include all sexualities.

The Groom!

Sean's a book hoarding, long hair wearing, Will Shortz admiring editor of words. He has a BA in Comparative Literature, a MS in Library and Information Sciences, and can often be found petting doggies in the Park Blocks. However, his love for puppehs in no way negates his love and devotion to Duncan, the cat he shares with his bride-to-be.

Lodging & Local Information

The wedding itself is taking place in Gearhart, a small town on the Oregon coast. The closest lodging options will be in Gearhart and Seaside; other towns to check out are Cannon Beach (about 7 miles south of Gearhart), and Astoria (about 12 miles north of Gearhart).

Here is a map of the wedding and local lodging recommendations and other pertinent information. You can use this interactive map to get directions from one place on the map to another (say, the airport to the ceremony, or from your hotel to a restaurant).

If you choose to stay somewhere other than the hotels on the map, please let us know! It is very easy for us to add locations to the map, so that you can use it for getting custom directions without needing to look up addresses or anything.

Go Northwest Travel Guide: Gearhart, OR

There's not too much on here, but it does have information about vacation rentals, as well as dining and shopping in Gearhart proper.
Seaside Visitors Bureau

Just south of Gearhart, Seaside has been a popular ocean resort town for over a century. The Visitors Bureau website provides the normal info: lodging, events, and a form to request a free travel guide.
Cannon Beach Chamber and Information Center

Currently the most popular town on the north coast, Cannon Beach is a cute little town of boutiques, B&Bs, and iconic Haystack Rock. The chamber of commerce website has lots of information about things to see and do in this bustling tourist town.
Astoria and Warrenton Chamber of Commerce

Astoria is so much more than just the house in the movie Goonies - though it is that too. Seated where the Columbia River meets the Pacific, Astoria is full of history and charm. Don't overlook it just because it's a little farther from the wedding; it's a beautiful drive and totally worth it! Plus, since it's not a traditional beach town, you may be able to score cheaper rooms here than in Cannon Beach or Seaside.

Bring a towel or blanket, your favorite picnic food, and remember to wear sunscreen! If you would like to bring grillables, the newlyweds will have a portable gas grill on hand for the event. The beach is accessible by car for those with trouble walking far on the sand; we will make sure everyone can make it to the picnic comfortably!

*In the event of a rainout, the ceremony will take place in the reception space at the Sand Trap.

Our first contact was nearly a month before we actually met. Dana was at home for the summer - she had just graduated from college - and out of boredom logged into her account on OKCupid (what, you know you've signed up to take the quizzes - don't lie!)... and found she had a new message!

Most of the messages she normally received were from middle-aged losers with a love for "thick women" that bordered on obsessive... ew. But this one was different.

And it began!

Subject: Assuming I'm not too old...

Body: I think you could find a lot to talk about with a librarian/writer who's working on a (2nd) Master's in Frencha and Spanish lit at PSU. And I wouldn't mind seeing those green eyes across the table from me over dessert at the Pied Cow. Or a spontaneous adventure. Or just yakking about school. Or a movie by Charliewes Kaufmanderson. And any of the above can be combined with some multicolored apples.

So check me out like the library item I am and see if you think you could have a dessert or three with the guy in the picture.

A spark ignited...

We went on our first date on September 7th.

We met up at Starbucks, and played two games of Scrabble. (For those who care, I kicked his ass. He denies it because he's a wimp.) After Scrabble, we decided to go out to dinner at Cha, Cha, Cha, a Mexican restaurant in the PSU district.

He kissed me for the first time on the steps outside Starbucks. We've been practically inseparable ever since!

Sean almost proposed in the jewelry store.

Dana encouraged him to wait for a better moment, and he did... a whole three hours. They were at McMenamins Market Street Pub, waiting for a friend. He recalls that The Ramones' "We're a Happy Family" was playing on the radio. While she was looking away, he slipped the ring on her finger and asked her to marry him. Of course she said yes!

So, who's in the wedding party? Can I be in the wedding party? I want to wear an ugly poufy dress, please can I?

Call us strange, but we've decided NOT to have a wedding party. I know it's not fair to you, our friends who long to buy overpriced dresses and stand in front of 150 strangers looking like a lavender marshmallow. However, we have our reasons.

1. There are too damned many of you who are close to us... we could never choose. Really, we couldn't. We tried.

2. We know that most of you are traveling for this wedding, and really, we'd prefer you take a seat and enjoy the show.

3. We like to be different. And it's our wedding. So there.

Now, if you really desire to wear an ugly dress to our wedding... feel free. Our colors are dark purple and a light green. For more inspiration, read "What's in a Theme?"

I've never been to the Oregon coast before... how should I dress?

Late August on the coast is beautiful weather-wise... that said, this is the ocean we're talking about, and its a bit breezy... so it will be chilly, even at high noon. If you plan to wear something short-sleeved, it wouldn't hurt to bring a cardigan or a light weight jacket to throw on while we're outside.

As for the rest of the time you're in Oregon, we're pretty casual out here on the left coast. Even in Portland, you'll see people go to the opera in jeans. (A crime, I know, but it is done. Regularly. Silly hippies.) Our idea of dressy out here is probably what most of you midwesterners would call "Sunday best."

For the wedding itself, while it's nowhere near black tie, we are hoping you'll choose to dress up for the occasion. Dresses and suits, you know, the usual wedding threads. If you would like to do something a bit more exotic in light of our silly theme, you have our blessing!

You kids have been living in sin for quite some time... what can I get you that you need and don't already have?

Gifts are totally not required - we realize that most of you are traveling, and it's often impractical and expensive to travel with gifts or ship the gifts ahead of time. That said, if you feel obligated, we do have a couple registries going, which you can get to through the site map on the right. Whatever you choose to do, know that we are delighted to have you here, and that our main concern is that you all have a good time while you're here!

I just landed at Portland International Airport. I'm vaguely aware that there is an ocean to the west of me, but I've no clue how to get to it. Help!
